Dan Colvin Art Studio in VR

Case Study: An immersive VR video visit to sculpture and mixed-media artist Dan Colvin’s private studio in Fall City, Washington

The idea: capture the artist and his studio in VR

Daniel Colvin has spent the last 20 years full time as an artist in Seattle region, the last 8 focused mainly on sculpture. His pieces in wood, stone and glass focus on abstract figurative forms which cultivate a sense of timeless mystery that seeks to blend both the ancient and the contemporary into unique and poignant work.
His indoor/outdoor studio in woods near Carnation Washington is a unique location for documenting his art process in VR 360 and 180 video formats. The 3d nature of sculpture makes it uniquely suited to the immersive nature of VR filmmaking.

Exploring depth and proximity to VR camera

In filming the work in the the studio, careful attention was given to spatial orientation and the layering sculptural pieces to take advantage of the sense of depth and surround that 360 Video affords.  The filmmakers also played with he sense of time, by layering numerous moments of the artist at work into a single shot, condensing the work process into an intriguing visual statement and offering the viewer an exploratory experience in discovering the various activities taking place in the 360 degree world of a compelling art studio, indoors and out.
